Towards A Legal Regime For Health And Safety In Energy Transition

Abstract
This article discusses the need to promote health and safety in the energy sector
in the era of energy transition. It accounts for health and safety concerns in the
energy sector. It argues that the energy transition brings with it a new
dimension to health and safety that is distinct from what has been experienced
in fossil fuels and nuclear energy generation. The implications are that new
liabilities are arising from these technologies, raising fresh health and safety
considerations distinct from the traditional energy sector. It calls for the
development of a new regime for health and safety that puts standards for
energy transition technologies in place, a liability regime, and compliance
mechanisms through regulators. Energy transition therefore should account
for the development of a viable regime that accommodates the peculiarities of
safety issues in sustainable energy deployment.
